President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the death of a renowned Professor of Medicine, Ayodeji Femi-Pearse, who died on Friday aged 86.
The President, in a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Sunday, condoled with the entire Femi-Pearse family, friends and relations.
This is even as renowned Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology and IVF Specialist, Oladapo Ashiru, also expressed his condolences to the family of the late academic clinician.
In his message, Buhari urged the Femi-Pearse family to take solace in the fact that their patriarch left his footprints on the sands of time, serving meritoriously at the General Hospital, Lagos, and also at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, among others.
Buhari noted that while combining medical practice with academics, Prof. Femi-Pearce was also an Acting Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos; and later, the Pro-Chancellor, Lagos State University, for four years.
“At retirement, he co-founded the leisure resort, Whispering Palms, which he managed with his wife.
“Tremendous impact was made on the host community through various social development interventions,’’ Buhari said.
The President, who prayed God to grant repose to the soul of the deceased, urged those he left behind to keep his memory alive through the preservation of his legacies.
In his eulogy, Prof. Ashiru noted that Prof. Ayodeji Femi-Pearse (OFR), in the evening of Friday, December 28, 2018, died at 86 years old.
Ashiru wrote, “Prof. Femi-Pearse commenced his career at the General Hospital, Lagos, served meritoriously at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and College of Medicine, where he balanced his academic pursuits with medical practice.
“A distinguished medical scholar who was instrumental in the establishment of the Lagos State University College of Medicine, at LUTH, Femi-Pearse served the medical community in various capacities from Head of the Department of Medicine to Provost of the College of Medicine and Chief Medical Director of LUTH; as well as acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos during the Unilag crisis of 1981.
“Between 1999 and 2003, Prof. Femi-Pearse was the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the Lagos State University.”
