Barcelona have confirmed that Lionel Messi will not be signing a new deal at the club.
The club said this in a tweet and statement on its website on Thursday.
Details about Messi’s exit have not been confirmed, however, speculation has been rife about the Argentine quitting the Spanish club.
The forward has verbally revealed he wanted to leave Barcelona during the last summer, however, the Club President then, Josep Maria Bartomeu ensured the Argentine could not leave.
Messi was also committed to seeing off his contract at Barcelona despite expressing his desire to leave.
He committed to spending last season, stating that he wants to avoid any legal clash with his boyhood club.
Reports emerged earlier on Thursday that Messi would be signing a new contract this week after his previous contract with the club expired on July 1.
This follows several reports that the player agreed to a 50 percent pay cut and a five-year deal with Barca after his success with Argentina at Copa America.
Upon his exit, Messi has achieved a lot with Barcelona. He helped the club win 34 trophies.
