Senate on Wednesday called on the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) as well as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to implement minimum standards for articulated vehicles imported into Nigeria to ensure that they meet import standards.
This followed consideration of the report of Senate Committee on Marine Transport in respect of Apapa Ports gridlock, majorly caused by articulated vehicles.
It also called on ministry of transport and ministry of works to develop a master plan for inter-modal transportation system to reduce traffic gridlocks on the roads, particularly in Lagos.
The upper chamber further urged the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to expedite action on the repair of pipelines that transfer petroleum products from Lagos to other parts of the country.
The DPR and NPA were equally asked to as a matter of urgency relocate tank farms to other sites in the country, including Lekki, Ikorodu, Port Harcourt, Warri and Calabar, to decongest Apapa and Tin Can ports.
Presenting the report of the committee, its chairman, Ahmed Sani (APC- Zamfara West), expressed concern that the logjam in Apapa had serious consequences on economic activities in the area.
Sani noted that the Apapa Port terminals formed vital part of the nation’s inter-modal transportation chain, adding that “this requires urgent attention from relevant stakeholders.”
