Alakija Donates N1bn To Fight Against Coronavirus

Modupe and Folorunsho Alakija, Nigerian industrialists, have announced a donation of N1 billion to support the fight against coronavirus.

The donation was made through Famfa Oil Ltd, one of the leading indigenous exploration and production companies in Nigeria.

In a statement, the management of the oil company said the fund will be shared among major stakeholders on the frontline of the challenge.

It said the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Lagos state government will get N250 million each.

Medical workers on the frontline in Lagos will get a donation of N100 million, and their counterparts in Abuja will get the same amount.

African center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases will get a donation of N50 million, Ameyo Stella Adadevoh will get N5 million, while N245 million will be allocated to the supply of medical equipment to relevant organisations.

“As the world rallies to deal with the health, security, economic and social implications of the coronavirus, it’s clear that we will feel the effects much more deeply than many of the developed world,” the statement read.

“Managing a crisis of this magnitude means that the strength of our response will determine our ability to weather the storm.

“Individually and collectively, we are rising to this unprecedented challenge in a way that symbolizes our resilience, our character and strength.

“With our contribution we will together take the charge in our fight against the Coronavirus. These are the organisations we as a company will work in adhering to their needs and will interact with suppliers so that we can deploy our contribution in the most impactful way.

“Famfa Oil Ltd commends the efforts made by the Federal and State Governments towards the fight against the pandemic in Nigeria and enjoin all Nigerians to follow stipulated health guidelines in order to keep us all safe. May God Bless our country Nigeria.”

Nigeria has confirmed 111 coronavirus cases, of which two death has been recorded.

Of the 111 confirmed cases, Lagos has 68; the FCT 21, Oyo seven and Ogun three.

Enugu, Edo, Bauchi and Osun all have two cases each while Ekiti, Rivers, Benue and Kaduna all have one case each.

On Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari announced a lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and Abuja to contain the disease.
