Producers of 93 Days, a film about Nigeria’s battle against Ebola, have said that the family of the late Dr. Stella Adadevoh lacks the power to stop the movie.
Reacting to a letter in which the Adadevoh and Cardoso families of the doctor dissociated themselves from the production, and threatened to take a legal action should the producers continue with the film, they noted that it was not about the late doctor.
In a statement on Wednesday night, the producers, including the Chief Executive Officer of Terra Kulture, Mrs. Bolanle Austen-Peters, said, “We hereby strongly deny allegations contained in the recent press statement released by one Dr. Ama Adadevoh, who claims to be acting on behalf of the Cardoso and Adadevoh families. The allegations are not only untrue, they are also malicious and a calculated attempt to sabotage our feature film, 93 Days.
“93 Days is not a biopic of any one individual and has never claimed to be the story of Dr. Stella Adadevoh. While that in itself is a strong story, we found it compelling to tell a story that celebrates many of the heroes of the fight against Ebola.
“These include doctors, nurses and members of staff of First Consultant Hospital, employees of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, members of the Emergency Operations Centre, corporate individuals who rose to the challenge of fighting the scourge as well as the WHO team that came in to help at the risk of personal injury and even death.”
They added that it was the global importance of the work that made them to enlist international actors that include Danny Glover and Bimbo Akintola.
Earlier in the week, the families of the deceased doctor who treated and boldly restricted the movement of Patrick Sawyer, the American-Liberian through whom the disease got to Nigeria, claimed that she was not properly represented in the story.
But the producers insisted that they sought the consent of the two families and discussed the script with them.
They added, “We elnlisted the help of the Adadevoh and Cardoso families from day one. They gave their comments on the script and their amendments were incorporated into the final script.”
