I was impressed by your candid outburst on radio this morning over the issue of Lagos population. This is what some of us have seen years ago and also faulted Gov. Fashola’s approach as shortsighted and too primitive in controlling population in Lagos by deportation.
A systemic approach is needed to discourage migration into Lagos State which we’ve been talking about for a while. It’s a fact that Lagos attracts everyone with the hope of having greener pastures despite not having the possibilities of making it.
We’ve heard several stories of people who came to Lagos with nothing, no skill, no business capital but later become rich in Lagos. This kind of stories still drive people into Lagos today, the truth is that only 2% of those people are successful in Lagos, others are wanderers and criminal elements in our society.
Lagos is Projected to be over 32 billion by 2050 with 3.2% increase yearly, this is outrageous for this small City state. A proactive measures and a political will is needed needed to safe Lagos from this mess. Most people migrating to Lagos are unskilled and have nothing to do in Lagos.
The implications of over population in Lagos are:
i) High crime rate
ii) high rate of social disturbance
iii) All forms of pollution
iv) Overstretched waste management system
v) Overstretched infrastructure
vi) High cost of infrastructural maintenance and management
vii) Overstretched social service institutions i.e Hospitals
viii) High budget spending.
Solution:
i) switch into effective digital & ICT Data Management
ii) Special law enforcement units available at community level
iii) Strong Urban control policy
iv) Strong social infrastructural policy
v) Encourage neighboring states to build and develop border towns.
Benefits:-
It will help in reduction of crime
It will help in gathering information at the community level
It will help investigation and enhance Lagos public database management system
It will control migration into the state
It will help to generate fund
It will help in tax collection
It will help to raise people’s oriented security platform
It will help in distribution of welfare
It will help to determine workforce, employability and employment status of the residents
It will create job opportunities for the youth
It will reduce domestic violence
It will help strengthen the use of crime database
We have a plan to help government achieve these goals and make Lagos a truly megacity with Smart City operations.
Am sorry for sending you this message but I can’t just hold back listening to you passionately talking about issues that can help us move forward in Lagos.
