A New Nigeria Is Possible – SDP

AWKA – The Social Democratic Party (SDP) says that the corporate existence of the country called Nigeria is under threat following agitations from all parts of the country.

SDP at a world press conference in Awka at the weekend, noted that the annulment of the June 12 1993 presidential election marked the end of democratic principles in Nigeria because it was clear to all and sundry that late Moshood Abiola won the presidential election which was truncated by militaristic machinations.

Chairman of the SDP in Anambra state, Dr. Webster Okonkwo said ever since Nigeria’s democracy became lopsided, national integration became staggering leading to some sections of the country seeking secession and self-rule.

Okonkwo explained that the emergence of Boko Haram insurgency in 2009 saw the beginning of downfall of Nigeria because agitations spread to other parts of the country.

He said currently the Southwest have agitations, the Southeast have agitations, the Niger Delta have agitations and that when these agitations are summed up to Boko Haram insurgency that has been in existence since 2009, one would certainly discover that the country called Nigeria is under serious threat and that if care is not taken Nigeria may eventually be laid to rest.

According to him, the June 12 1993 presidential election portrayed the fact that it was possible for Nigerians to put aside their inherent differences and disagreements to elect their leaders in an atmosphere comparable to best democracies in the world.

The Anambra SDP chairman opined that the June 12 1993 presidential election was a veritable opportunity for Nigerians to prove to the rest of the world that it was possible to rise above religious bigotry to elect their leaders.

Again, he said that on June 12, 1993, Nigerians demonstrated beyond doubt that it was possible to put aside all ethnic and cultural differences to speak with one voice for the progress of the nation.

He said that Nigerians confirmed on June 12, 1993 that it was possible for hope to prevail over despair. For prosperity to prevail over poverty. Love over hatred and unity over disintegrations.

Okonkwo however observed that in the present circumstance, Nigeria was under increasing threats because he believed that the foundation for a new Nigeria laid by the ill-fated June 12, 1993 presidential election has been totally destroyed and that the aftermaths were hunger, starvation, poverty, banditry, religious extremism, insurgency and other vices militating against the progress of the nation.

But in spite of the oddities aforestated, the Social Democratic Party expressed hope that a new Nigeria was possible. That it was possible to rebuild the foundations of the country on the strongholds of justice and fairness. Honesty, transparency and good governance.
