The Minister of Defence, Mansur Ali, said on Tuesday that 20,000 ghost workers have been removed from the ministry’s payroll, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Ghost workers is a term used to refer to fictitious names and accounts used to receive salaries for non-existent workers.
Although the current federal administration and previous ones have always announced the removal of thousands of ghost workers from payrolls, no person has been convicted for benefitting from the fraud.
On Tuesday, Mr. Ali, a retired brigadier general, said removing the ghost workers helped the government save millions of naira.
