UNILAG shutdown over fuel crisis …… VANGUARD

Authorities of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, have ordered the immediate closure of the institution, ordering all students to vacate halls of residence before 10am yesterday (Friday). In a release by its Management, the Senate of UNILAG considered closure of the institution imperative due to students’agitation over poor electricity and water supply in the community, and the difficulty faced by the large number of students living off campus to attend classes as a result of the fuel crisis.

The Senate said that the problem of poor municipal services was a national issue that the Governments at both State and Federal level were addressing. It said: “In order to forestall a further breakdown of law and order on campus, Senate resolved that all academic activities on campus are hereby suspended with immediate effect. “The University is therefore closed with immediate effect. All students are to vacate the various halls of residence immediately. No student should remain in the halls of residence after 10.00a.m on Friday, 8th April, 2016. A decision to re-open for normal academic activities will be taken as soon as municipal services improve.”

It urged all members of the University community to go about their normal activities as adequate security measures have been put in place Meanwhile, Police from Sabo, Denton, Surulere, Bariga and Orile divisions, in 8 patrol vans, on Thursday morning had mounted surveillance at the Akoka end of the gate leading to the University of Lagos. It will be recalled that aggrieved students of the university had since Wednesday engaged the management of the first generation institution over poor electricity and water supply situation on campus.
