THE ADEMILUYI ROYAL FAMILY OF ILE-IFE MAKES A BOLD MOVE FOR THE ANCIENT STOOL By Tony Ademiluyi

On Thursday, 20th August, 2015, the Ademiluyi Royal Family of the Lafogido ruling house held a well-attended meeting to kick starts the onerous process of fielding representatives to vie for the throne following the demise of Ooni Okunade Sijuade II of the Ogbooru ruling house whose near 35 year reign came to a glorious end early this month. A minute silence was observed for the repose of the late Ooni before the commencement of the meeting which took off with an opening prayer.

The incumbent President of the family, Professor (Prince) Adetunji Ademiluyi, relying on the authority of the Baale, Prince Adewewe Ademiluyi who doubles as the Baale of the Otutu lineage of the Lafogido ruling house said to the hearing of everyone present that it was the turn of the Lafogido ruling house to bring forth the next Ooni of Ife as the last one from the ruling house was Ooni Ademiluyi Ajagun who sat on the throne between 1910 and 1930 who ruled after the grandfather of the departed Ooni, Olubuse I and that the other three ruling houses – Giesi, Ogbooru and Osinkola should not contest with them for the throne. The qualification of the Princes was that they must be male descendants of the family and that the male sons of female children were barred from contesting in line with the traditions of Ile-Ife which is regarded as the spiritual home of the entire Yoruba nation both at home and in the diaspora.

The family will present candidates first to Otutu and then to Lafogido for screening.

Prayers were then offered for the continued peace and prosperity of the kingdom of Ife, the kingmakers, local government leadership and the State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola.

Sixteen members indicated interest in obtaining the nomination forms after they were all confirmed to be male descendants of the family. The nomination process still remains open and is subject to further review which the family will make deliberations upon and communicate to the members of the public.
