Sly ……Henry Egbunike

Sly OjigbedeGood evening Uncle JD!

If I am not mistaken, that’s how Sly (of blessed memory…may his soul rest in peace) used to refer to you. At times, he called you Mr. Jimi 2times…the meaning, I can never get to learn from him anymore…

I noticed how uncomfortable you felt this morning on the FPN when Yinka mentioned something about Sly, and I sensed immediately that something was amiss. As I listened on to 97.3 after the FPN, I got to hear about Sly’s passing on. I never knew about his demise until the later part of the morning. So sad!

I never met him or you, but I enjoyed the scenes you both created in the studio, during the analysis of the news on the papers and how you often cracked jokes about Sly being your in-law. If only he was still around to continue to be so…

Listening to Sly gave me a bit of insight into who he was…a family man…with 2 daughters and a loving wife…needs electricity 247…and complains about the road network and traffic situation in his neighbourhood…and so, I could relate excellently with him.

My attraction to Sly was further reinforced by his personality while on air, either on the FPN with you, or on Saturday mornings when he anchored the Rap & Hip-Hop Classics. He often reminded me of a sibling – a brother I lost a few years ago, to a motor accident which damaged his spinal column, and had him bed-ridden for a while before he passed on. Just like Sly, he LOVED music too.

I sense that his untimely demise and the fact that you struggled to wrap you head around how it has come about must have been what got you uncomfortable in discussing the issue with Yinka this morning.

Hearing about Sly made me wonder – does God love the music lovers so much that He takes them away in their prime? Way earlier than we would have envisaged them to live? But I guess He takes anyone he wants, when He knows it’s time for that soul to return to Him.

Sly’s time (perceived as unfortunate only because our reckoning is imperfect) has come. The pain we all feel from his departure – family, friends, fans etc. – is a testament to how beautiful his soul is and why God has decided to take him, and enjoy Sly for eternity.

I may never get close to his family, his friends (which includes you), colleagues, Classic FM 97.3 or fans to pay my personal respects and condolences, but I can do that through your blog. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Since he was Catholic as well, I say to his soul…

– Eternal rest grant unto you Sylvester “Sly” Ojigbede, and may perpetual light shine on you…

– Eternal rest grant unto you Sylvester “Sly” Ojigbede, and may perpetual light shine on you…

– Eternal rest grant unto you Sylvester “Sly” Ojigbede, and may perpetual light shine on you…

May your soul, and those of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Adieu bro…

    • If tears could bring back “father Sly”, am sure he’d be back now. I was still grappling with the sudden departure from his programs until I heard the rude news of his demise. If we that are not connected with him physically can be this sad, how sad can his family and colleagues be? I always looked forward to starting my days hearing his voice and Bukola’s every Monday to Friday and Saturdays. Uncle Jd, as he fondly called you, pls take solace in the fact that he’s gone to rest. I’ve been so affected by this great loss that my entire week has been terrible knowing I won’t have the opportunity of fulfilling my dream of meeting him and the other OAPs in Classic FM. BuKola, pls weep no more. I weep whenever I hear her tribute. Sleep on our main man, Sly. Till we meet at Jesus’ feet.

  11. Classical Sly,..he had so much to give.. laughter, music, and more. Was hoping you’d come out of it but God knows best.

Rest on Sly… would sorely miss you.

  12. With tears in my eyes, i say rest in peace Sly.

Yeah, the tributes from your colleagues brings more tears, listening to the FPN without you is soo sad.

Your jokes, laughter, voice gone with the wind.

I pray God sends favor to your wife and kids and may He grant all your loved ones the fortitude to bear this huge loss.

Rest in the bossom of the Lord Sly….

  13. I was privileged to work beside Sly and Bukola during the early morning Classic FM shows. I was motivated to be a Vanguard for FPN telling Family and friends about Sly, Bukola and Uncle JD and they have all benefited from listening to your comments and reactions on FPN.
He strives for excellence in his daily activity. He switches me into the technical mode when issues arise and he has to meet up with his deliverable. He was a great colleague and a loving family man. We worked together to inaugurate the opening of a Shopping complex a Surulere with Bukola. He is very humorous and addictive to the principles of work, play and thanksgiving. The Young, Old and all concerned will miss you and more importantly learn from you that we can make the best of what God has given us to the benefit of Humanity. Rest well bro.

  14. Inna Lilahi Waina Ilaihi Rojihun-un!!!

To all lovers of Classic FM accepted my condolence and will continue to pray God to grant his family, friends and fans the fortitude to bear his lost.

May his soul rest in peace…..

I GOT TO KNOW JUST NOW, AM SO DEVASTATED STILL CAN’T BELIEVE IT. GOD ALMIGHTY GRANT HIS WIFE, DAUGHTERS, FAMILY, CLASSIC FM COLLEAGUES THE FORTITUDE TO BEAR HIS DEMISE. MR. JIMI DISU PLEASE ACCEPT MY CONDOLENCES.

  16. I found it difficult to believe when I came across this sad news via twitter. Though, I never met him, in fact I am just seeing his picture for the first time but a painful loss to us the FPN listeners. RIP Father SLY. My heart is really heavy.

  17. I struggle to believe I won’t hear Sly call you Jimi two times, the name of a character from Goodfellas which he fondly called you anymore. I knew Sly growing up in the hood, Okota and even though we weren’t close, he was an all round stand up guy. It’s simply unbelievable I won’t hear him argue with uncle Jimi two times, the back and forths were always hilarious. I can only imagine how Bukky must be feeling, her tribute tore me apart. R.I.P Fada Sly, you will be greatly and sadly missed! So we won’t hear that baritone voice say good morning anymore, life… Sleep on Fada Sly and may God strengthen and keep the family you left behind.

  18. No words can ever express the deep sorrow one feel for the death of Father Sly. I really feel for Buki, Uncle JD and Silo. Sly add so much flavour to FPN and he makes me listen to RHHC every Saturday and the way he and Silo throw banters. It’s going to be so hard to take but who are we to question God. Please take heart guys. Sly, rest well brother

  19. Adieu. Father Sly.You are greatly missed. May God Almighty accept your soul and give your family, colleagues and fan the fortitude to bear the lost.

  20. Adieu “Father Sly” may your soul rest in peace. I never met you but I have loved you on air.

  21. Our main man Sly is gone. Will surely miss him. Actually was wondering is he was changing jobs bcos the “leave” was taking longer than I expected, and the station even ran out of his recordings of the old school highlife show. Sly mentioned there being “some changes at the station”, and I didn’t know that change would mean his leaving the station & the world permanently.will miss him most on saturdays, and mornings on weekdays whenever “his shows” come on going forward. I’m hurt & all, but feel for his colleagues at the station, especially Bukola, Silo, uncle JD and others he has touched directly. I hope we can get #RHHC trending in honor of Sly. I suggest the station does a special edition with recaps of his moments there. Sleep on brother, we’ve got your family covered.

  22. I look forward to 7am Monday to Friday, will delay my morning walk to listen to the three of you. When I heard on Monday afternoon all that I could think of was you Bukola and how you will call him father Sly. I also remember when he had the 2nd daughter and you teased him. I feel like I have lost a friend, you all have become part of my life.
My sympathy goes to you, Bukola the classic FM 97.3 family and his young family.

  23. Sly, I never met you but I love your daily paper review with JD and Bukola. May the Good Lord take care of your wife and two daughters. RIP “father Sly”. We your fans will miss you.

  24. I held back the tears because I said do people just die like that.and to think I didn’t know him. As I was coming to terms with Sly two days later another lovely guy like Sly named Deji Omotoso passed away. The highs of the elections have been dampened by the death of loved and great guys

  25. Sly: May your soul continue rest in tђǝ blossom of tђǝ Lord till we meet to part no more.
Your death is a tragic loss to tђǝ station and all their listeners and it shows you lived a good life while it last.
May God stands firmly by tђǝ family you lived behind.
    Adieu!!!

  26. God knows how hard it is. Anytime i tune in it’s like i still hear his baritone reverberating and constantly taunting JD. My heart goes to his family may God comfort his wife, children and parents and may his legacy not be brought to ruin. So long bro

    • Death why taken this dude so early?! I remember his opposing points against Uncle JD, his old school program, his intelligent and sense of humour, his compassionate for people, his coffee care for uncle JD etc… So i won’t meet this friend anymore on my return back to Nigeria… We your fans and folks are gon miss you. RIP FatherSLY

  27. I really don’t know what to say. My friend and I cried over the phone because of this heartbreaking news. I still can’t believe it! I once called sly, Bukola and Uncle JD “our triple strikers on radio”, in one of my tweets. I don’t know how Bukola is taking this, I really feel for her. Loosing a colleague as wonderful as Sly can throw one off balance. Take heart Uncle Jimi,Bukola,Yinka and to all FPN family. We all will miss you Sly. “Welcome to front page news and analysis on classic FM 97.3. Today is a top notch tuesday(he usually use that line on tuesdays).with me is Bukola and Jimi Disu,a.k.a Jimi 2 times…” (and he’ll chuckle). Sly lives on… RIP brother. (i’m still crying)

  28. I was so shocked and wept yesterday morning when I heard of Sly’s demise. I never met him but am gonna miss him so much, I grew to like him on the news analysis with Buki and uncle JD. I still cry each time I listen to your radio station and sly is mentioned. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. And, may the good Lord grant his wife and two daughters the fortitude to bear the loss. Adieu, a friend I never met!

  29. Reading this is something I’m still unable to comprehend,”does God love the music lovers so much that He takes them away in their prime”? Just wondering….A cousin whom i introduced to FPN called me early yesterday to inform of his demise not knowing I’ve heard it on Monday but I’m still hoping this wasn’t true. I know for sure that JD that i know will dedicate one Discourse for him, but i don’t know when that will be, even though i now live in Ibadan i’m still able to listen courtesy TuneIn Radio online. May His Soul Rest In Peace
