The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Katsina, has confirmed the death of 15 persons in the bomb blasts that rocked the GSM Market in the city on Wednesday.

He also said about 53 persons were injured in the blasts.

According to Mr. Katsina, 10 persons died on the spot while five of the 58 persons rushed to the hospital later died.

Already, the scene of the incident was cordoned off by security operatives when our reporter visited on Wednesday evening.

Two explosions, believed to be from improvised explosives devices , went off in the GSM market Wednesday evening.

A witness had told PREMIUM TIMES reporter that the first explosion occurred at the market’s entrance while the second device exploded near a pavilion in the centre of the market.

He said two vans filled with victims were driven away from the scenes of the explosion.

Our reporter, who arrived the scene, later said a teenage suicide bomber is believed to be behind one of the explosions.

An elderly suicide bomber is believed to have ferried the second device right into the centre of the market.
He reported seeing a mangled human leg, believed to belong to the teenage suicide bomber, near the gate of the market.

Another witness told our reporter that he was among those who prevented the teenage bomber from entering the market, forcing her to detonate the device at the gate.

Traders were seen carrying corpses and injured people to hospitals in cars owned by good Samaritans.

The incident came less than 24 hours after a similar explosion in a crowded park in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, left at least 34 people dead and 80 injured.

Today’s attack is the first attack on Kano since July 6 when a female suicide bomber struck near a Mosque in the city, killing herself.

  1. The agencies in charge should have been descent enough to put bodies of the victims in a body bag as practiced everywhere in the world. I bet you, this truck would haul those bodies across the city fully displayed for the view of everyone including children while on its way to the morgue.

Must we always show that we are “third world” in everything?
