Nigeria Waiting For Ndigbo—Okorocha

Owerri—Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has said that Nigeria as a country, is waiting for the Igbo people, just as he said, he has seen light at the end of the tunnel for Ndigbo in the country.

He stated this yesterday at the Government House Owerri, while receiving the wives of the Southeast governors who arrived the state for this year’s August meeting. He also used the opportunity to predicate on the America’s presidential election, saying, “Mrs. Bill Clinton is coming soon as President of America.

It looks as if there is a turn around.” But in what seems to be a contrary statement in the Nigeria situation, Okorocha said, “our wives, you have to wait small because we have not finished our work.” Continuing, he said: “The Igbo are very unique creatures of God.

Nigeria is waiting for Ndigbo. Africa is waiting for Ndigbo. I can see light at the tunnel of Nidigbo. Of all the meetings we have been having, this is the best.

There is nothing a man can do without a good woman behind him.

In my government, through my programmes and policies, I have encouraged women.” Speaking also, the chairman of the occasion who is the former Governor of Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo, regretted that all they had done when they were in power to put the Igbo in the pride of place could not yield much but now his view is to support the present leaders such as Governor Rochas Okorocha to achieve the objectives of the region.

“I have not attended anyone but this one is special. I am here because Okorocha is very innovative and has vision for the Igbo race. All of us who have ruled this country one way or the other have suffered because we are Igbos. So, we have to come together and be united.

In Igboland, we value women so much and anything you do without the women is a total failure. I think Okorocha understands the situation very well. Imagine, when you are going to campaign and women tell you that they will vote for you.

You are assure of their votes.” In her remarks, the chairman of the Southern Governors wife, Nkechi Nneoma Rochas Okorocha who is also the wife of the Imo State Governor, said that love has brought them together to discuss the development of Igbo nation and the position of the girl child in the society.

“Our hearts are full of joy. We have gathered here today for a singular reason and what is that reason, because of love and the girl child.

How can we protect our cultural values no wonder the theme for this year’s August meeting is “looking at the next generation of mothers” because whatever a woman does not nurture will not live.

We women have resolved to go back to the drawing board to give the best to the girl child. Our essence of gathering here is not political or personal interest but to take the bull by the horn,” she said.

Adding her voice, the wife of the Enugu state governor, Mrs. Monica Uguanyi, advised women to support their fellow women in politics as such was one of the ways for them to attain politically their vision, saying, “I also want to advise you women to not to see today’s occasion as a competition but an opportunity to unite ourselves for tomorrow.

It is good that as parents that you train your children in the fear of God and our culture that supports morality.” In her vote of thanks, Mrs. Josephine Aninih called on Governor Rochas Okorocha to try his best in bringing together the men in Igboland for them to unanimously move forward as well find solutions to the present challenges facing the region.

“The first thing is to know yourself before you know the way forward. My Governor, I want you to get all your brothers together so that Nigeria will know about us” she said. Some of dignitaries who were at the event included, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, wife of the executive governor of Abia state, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu; former Governor of Anambra state, Chukwuemeka Ezeife; wife of the late Head of state, Lady Victoria Aguiyi Ironsi among others.
