Nigeria gets 20,931 new domains names

Nigeria has increased the number of registered domain names in the country’s code Top Level Domain (ccTLD), .ng, by 20,931 new domains names in the first seven months of this year.

This was contained in the latest Domain Name Report by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) obtained by New Telegraph. The report shows that the country’s Domian Names System (DNS) market continues to gain traction in the terms of adoption.

The study shows that there was further increase in the domain name registration and renewal in July 2015 with significant increases at the second and third levels. From January to July 2015, 8,705 domain names were renewed and a total of 12,226 new domain names registered.

This means that from January to July 2015, NiRA had 20,931 domain names, inclusive of new registrations and renewals at both second and third levels. New Telegraph learnt that the figure represents a higher level of achievement when compared to the number of domain names registered and renewed during the same period last year. From January to July 2014, there were 11,076 new registrations and 7,280 renewals. So, for the period January to July 2014, there were 18,356 registrations and renewals.

A breakdown of the report showed that in January, there were 1,542 registered domain names, 1,070 renewed and 41 transferred. In February, NiRA recorded 1,512 registered, 1,048 renewed and 45 transferred domain names.

In March, the figures increased to 1,805 registered, 1,429 renewed and 67 transferred .ng domain names, while in April, registration declined to 1,509; renewal to 1, 371 and transfer stood at 63. Also in May, the number of registered domain names was 1,511, while renewed and transferred domains declined sharply to 1,237 and 32 respectively.

However, the trend got a fillip as registrations increased to 2,087; renewal reached 1,268 with 54 transfers in June. The month of July came with additional vigour, as registered domain names hit 2,260; renewed domain names stood at 1,282 with 33 transfers.

“Comparing same period in 2014 and 2015, there are more domain name activities in 2015. This increase can be attributed to greater awareness and understanding of the benefits to be derived from the .ng brand name,” said NiRA President, Mr. Sunday Afolayan.

Afolayan, who envisaged a boom in the DNS business globally as more people get online, said that discerning players in the market must have seen a spike in registration of domain names since the Google created a parent company, Alphabet.
