NCAA alerts airline operators on contaminated jet fuel ….. PUNCH

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has put all airline operators on the alert following discovery that an Airbus A330, which refuelled in Lagos recently was discovered to have got contaminated fuel.

An NCAA statement issued on Thursday stated that the European Aviation Safety Agency issued an alert after advice from Rolls Royce, which manufactured the Trent 700 engines that powered the Airbus A330.

The company found the presence of super absorbent polymer, a contaminant, which it said had the potential of causing disruptions which could lead to fatal failure of aircraft engines.

“This is to inform the industry of the observed measures of aviation fuel containing this element – super absorbent polymer – and to advise all concerned to establish monitoring and control measures of aviation fuel to enable regulators and operators get to the root source of the element, the NCAA statement signed by the Director, Airworthiness Standards, Mr. Benedict Adeyileka, said.

This is coming on the heels of the alarm raised by the Chairman of Forte Oil, Mr. Femi Otedola, earlier in the week when he called on regulatory authorities to probe the use of kerosene in place of JET A1 by fuel marketers. Otedola had described the illicit action as a rising trend that needed to be curbed.
