Shettima Monguno, former Minister of Mines and Petroleum, died on Friday, July 8th, 2016, at the age of 90. He will be buried according to the Islamic rite today, Saturday, July 9th, 2016 by 2 pm in his residence at the Old GRA, Maiduguri.
According to Premium Times; the Secretary to Bornu State Governor, Jidda Shuwa, made the announcement through a statement.
Born in 1926 at Monguno, Borno state; he attended Monguno primary school, Teacher’s College Bauchi, Moray House College of Education, Katsina College of Arts, science, and technology Zaria before proceeding to the University of Edinburgh in England.
Shettima was a minister in the first republic, former presidential candidate in 1990, chairman of the Borno Elders Forum, former President of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Deputy National Chairman National Party of Nigeria, Chairman, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, member Constituents Assembly, an educationalist, and a philanthropist.
He was once abducted by the dreaded Boko Haram sect but later released and dumped at Marte Local government area, where security officials picked him up. He would be remembered for his philanthropic donation to Borno state Library board.
Until his death, he received a number of national honours and awards- national honours from Ethiopia, Republic of Egypt, Sudan and Cameroon in 1970, National Honour – Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic CFR in 1982 and an honorary Road Marshall in 1986.
